PEFC UK becomes TIMCON member

PEFC UK (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification UK) has announced it has signed up as a member of the Timber Packaging & Pallet Confederation (TIMCON).

PEFC UK is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to promoting sustainable forest management through independent third-party certification. It reportedly plays a major role in supporting the UK timber industry’s sustainability commitments by working with stakeholders across the supply chain. TIMCON is the industry association for the wooden pallet and packaging sector in the UK and Ireland.

The move is said to be part of both organisations’ strategy of collaborating closely with partners in complementary sectors of the forest-based industry.

John Kirkby, PEFC UK’s Executive Director, said: “PEFC UK is always looking at ways in which we can collaborate within the timber industry to promote sustainable forest management and responsible sourcing of timber, so we are delighted to join TIMCON as an affiliate member.

“We look forward to learning more about the pallet and packaging industry, and partnering with the trade body of a sector that across the UK and Ireland uses around 1.5m3 of sawn timber annually will hopefully provide us with a greater opportunity to increase awareness of the benefits of specifying timber from sustainably managed and certified forest for use in timber pallet and packaging manufacture within the UK and Ireland.”

Stuart Hex, TIMCON General Secretary, added: “We’re really pleased to announce that PEFC UK has joined us.

“Welcoming organisations such as PEFC UK into TIMCON is a key part of our strategy to collaborate more closely with like-minded organisations across the forest-based sector at home and internationally.

“It supports our shared goals, including championing the use of sustainable timber in the manufacture and repair of pallets and packaging and boosting overall confidence in the sustainability of the forest-based industries such as ours.”

UAP says firemongery “should be treated seriously”
