Machu PiGchu: Getting to know Andy Ball

In October, a team of brave PiGs will take on the iconic Inca Trail in Peru, all in aid of our Charity of the Year, Harry’s Pals.

In this series of articles, we’re introducing you to the people behind the challenge, finding out a little more about what inspired them to take part, how they’re preparing for the adventure and what they’re looking forward to most.

This article is all about Andy Ball. We caught up with him to find out more about his Machu PiGchu journey…

Why did you sign up for the Inca Trail?
After Kilimanjaro, I really wanted to do another challenge. I have always wanted to visit Machu Picchu so it made it an easy yes!

What are you most looking forward to?
Getting to the Sun Gate and seeing the historic site in front of us. This is one of the most iconic places in the world, and you can only get that perfect view if you’ve walked the trail.

What are you most nervous about?
After Kilimanjaro, I know how tough it is hiking at altitude, so I am least looking forward to the long day where we tackle Dead Woman’s Pass at 4200m.

How’s the training going?
We have just come back from a 2-day training doing just over 10 miles each day on the Northeast coast of England.

There were a lot of steps up and down and it felt like good practice for the upcoming trek.

What does Harry’s Pals mean to you?
I found out a lot about the charity after talking with g Harry’s dad Andrew on the Kilimanjaro challenge.

This small charity needs funds to increase the support to parents of severely ill or disabled children with free counselling and restorative getaways to ease isolation and emotional strain, and this trip with all the money combined will make a big difference.
