Harlow Timber apprentice shortlisted for Furniture Makers award
Kenzie Pick, who is currently completing his Level 3 Bespoke Furniture Maker apprenticeship, designed and created a piece of furniture – River Table – which has been shortlisted in the Bespoke Apprentice category in the New Furniture Makers exhibition, organised by The Furniture Makers Company.
Kenzie said: “I’m over the moon that it was shortlisted – and I can’t believe my work is going to be on display in London.”
Although Kenzie’s day job would not usually be creating pieces of furniture like this, Kenzie has used his apprenticeship to learn as much as he can and seize any opportunity he is offered.
“From the beginning Kenzie has engaged and pushed himself in every training session,” said Craig Martin, Kenzie’s Training Officer.
“As soon as he started his Level 3, he was adamant in creating a piece to the very best of his ability specifically for this competition – so it is great to see all of his hard work and commitment recognised.”
Harlow Timber Group have long been an advocate for learning and development, with a strong apprenticeship scheme within the business – alongside Kenzie there are another two Level 3 apprentices.
The company has also fully supported Kenzie’s submission – even giving him extra time at the training centre to complete the project.
Steve Osbourne, Senior Operations Manager for Harlow Timber Group said: “As a long-standing business, Harlow’s has always recognised the importance of supporting and developing our employees.”
“Encouraging, training, and mentoring of people such as Kenzie is at the heart of everything we represent as an Employee-Owned business.
“Kenzie has shown a positivity and determination which alongside hard work and excellent training has helped to bring the best out of him and he is great example of everything Harlow’s represents.”
The New Furniture Makers exhibition is a celebration of design and excellence in craftmanship for those new to the industry, taking place on Wednesday 4 November between Furniture Makers Hall and Dutch Church in the City of London, and is free to attend.
Kenzie’s piece that will be displayed there features a beautiful piece of live edge oak, where one of Kenzie’s inspirations was taking old pieces of and giving them new life.
Kenzie explained: “The piece of wood I chose was literally falling apart – the supplier asked if I wanted it bolting together!
“But that was the point – I see so much wood thrown away for being old or damaged, but my piece purposely used these pieces to show they can be turned into something amazing.”
WEBS Training also has a second apprentice shortlisted – upholstery apprentice Ryan Fawsitt of George Stewart Design has been shortlisted in the Manufacturing Apprentice category.
