Kirkwood TF’s Barbara Massie Completes #Run60 Challenge

Barbara Massie from Kirkwood Timber Frame has put her best foot forward, taking part in the #Run60 challenge that raises awareness and funds for a charity that lifts the lid on the bowel and autoimmune disorder  – Crohn’s and Colitis.

As part of Crohn’s and Colitis UK #Run60, during September, Barbara completed 60 miles – walking and running.

She has a very personal reason for taking part. Diagnosed with Crohn’s at 28, she has battled the disease in silence, as well as managing being a Type 1 Diabetic, undergoing surgeries whilst looking after her family and maintaining a successful career.

Barbara said: “I’ve mainly hidden my Crohn’s disease for over 15 years as I didn’t feel as a career women it was something to advertise or bring to the forefront. I wanted to be seen for my own abilities and not labelled or judged.  As it is an auto immune disease its symptoms can be multiple and affecting every person differently.

“However, I hope that by sharing my story and struggles I can inspire, and support others living with Crohn’s and encourage more people to feel comfortable talking about  ‘crap! The more we initiate these conversations we improve access, education and support mechanisms for those living with Crohn’s and Colitis, their families, healthcare providers, employers and educational institutions.”

Barbara, with the support of her husband Richard, children Jack and Scarlett, and Labrador Buddy completed the challenge with a family walk on Sunday 28 September.

Each year, over 24,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with Crohn’s or Colitis – that’s around 66 people every single day.

Barbara added:  “I have been blown away be everyone’s’ support and generosity, with over £1200 raised so far. This money will support vital research and support services provided by Chrohn’s and Colitis UK.

“This has been a great journey so far – and I don’t mean all the steps I am getting in! – but it has introduced me to a whole new community of Chron’s and Colitis warriors that are not allowing their conditions to define them – it is truly inspiring”.
