Sarah Ball’s take on Women in Timber event

Modern Joinery News’ own Sarah Ball attended the first Women in Timber event on 5 September at Oulton Hall, Leeds. Here’s her round-up of the day.

“When we first heard about Women in Timber, we felt that the time was right for the industry. We publicised the event, and Sarah booked her place at the inaugural seminar on 5 September.

“What we couldn’t have predicted was the willingness and readiness of women to put their heads above the parapet and share their success stories.

“The day itself was superb. More than 120 women rocked up to the lovely setting of Oulton Hall in support of other women in the industry. With levels of attraction to the industry at an all-time low, championing women entering the industry offers a bigger talent pool. And if the calibre of women already in the industry is anything to go by, the future looks bright. Women represented the complete supply chain – from management to the shop floor – and many were in supporting roles.

“After a morning of speedy networking with human bingo and an informative LinkedIn session run by Judy Parsons, the afternoon showcased four powerful success stories from Michelle Buckland, Claire Toomey, Camila Fish, and Rosie Wise, all with incredible careers in timber. And they all spoke with passion about their work.

“What struck me was that it demonstrated in such a positive way that any woman in that room could get to the top if she wanted.

“It’s rare to go to an event like this and feel that level of female empowerment, but the organisers got it spot on. This was a masterclass in supporting and celebrating women in the industry.

“The success of the Women in Timber event already means there will be another in 2026 – dates to be announced soon – and here at Modern Joinery News we are 100 percent committed to WIT and (breaking news) we are massively excited to become an official online media partner.”
