Carve Carrbridge: Where Timber Meets Talent

Carve Carrbridge: Where Timber Meets Talent

Each September, the quiet Highland village of Carrbridge roars to life with the buzz of chainsaws and the hum of anticipation. Carve Carrbridge isn’t just a carving competition — it’s a celebration of artistry, craftsmanship, and community spirit, all wrapped in the scent of fresh pine and the rhythm of roaring blades.

Carve Carrbridge competitionDave Mills, Timber Industry Consultant with 35 years’ experience and judge for Carve Carrbridge said: “In the lead-up to the event, I make several dedicated trips to forest sites across the region, selecting logs with large diameters and clean, straight form.

“These aren’t just pieces of timber—they’re the blank canvases upon which carvers will unleash their imagination. The right log can make all the difference, offering the stability and scale needed for bold, expressive designs while preserving the integrity of the wood throughout the carving process.

“A huge thank you goes to Oliver Stephen at BSW Timber for supporting the purchase of the logs — his help was instrumental in securing the quality timber we needed. And I’m especially grateful to Paul Mathieson and Kinsey Aikman from Tilhill, who went above and beyond to find a site where we could handpick some truly impressive logs. Their support made it possible to offer carvers the kind of material that inspires greatness.

“As a technical judge, I have the privilege of witnessing firsthand how each artist interacts with their chosen log. It’s not just about cutting — it’s about listening to the wood. The most compelling carvings often emerge when carvers embrace the natural features of the timber: the grain that mimics fur or feathers, the knots that become eyes or accents, the texture that adds depth and realism. These details aren’t flaws — they’re opportunities, and the best carvers know how to make them sing.

“Beyond the sawdust and spectacle, Carve Carrbridge holds deep meaning for the local community. The event raises vital funds for local charities and good causes, supporting everything from youth programs to elder care and village infrastructure. It’s a day where artistry meets generosity, and where the roar of chainsaws echoes with purpose.

“Whether you’re drawn by the thrill of the competition, the beauty of the carvings, or the warmth of the community, Carve Carrbridge is a Highland tradition that continues to carve its place in the hearts of all who attend.”
