Ventrolla restores Grade I listed Canons Ashby sash windows

Ventrolla has successfully completed specialist restoration works at Canons Ashby, a prestigious Grade I listed National Trust property in Northamptonshire.

Canons Ashby House, which features Elizabethan architecture and holds centuries of history, required expert conservation works to maintain the historical integrity, whilst enhancing the efficiency of the original sash windows. The Ventrolla team was appointed to carry out essential repairs to the front elevation, across both the ground and first floors, with a total of 16 windows.

The project involved a heritage-led restoration effort, including restoring rotten timbers, draught-proofing, sill replacement, re-glazing and the installation of new parting beads. To retain the building’s historic charm, all hardware from the original windows was reused.

Ventrolla’s approach prioritised minimal disruption to visitors at the property, utilising mobile towers to ensure restoration work could continue seamlessly. This also eliminated the need for fixed scaffolding at the historic site.

Unlike typical sash window repairs, Canons Ashby houses sensitive historic artefacts and delicate interior finishes that require strict climate control to prevent damage. Protective measures were put in place to shield the interiors from dust, debris, and sudden changes in temperature or moisture. This involved a phased and methodical approach to the repairs, allowing the environment to remain stable while work progressed.

Furthermore, to balance the preservation needs with conservation requirements, a decision was made to only apply the Ventrolla Perimeter Sealing System (VPSS) to the sash perimeters rather than the full frames.

The completed works enhance the comfort of those visiting the property, while the removal of any rot helps to extend the lifespan of the original windows. Additionally, the Ventrolla team also upgraded the sash cords and reweighted the sashes to help restore full operational integrity.

Mark Flanagan, Managing Director of Ventrolla, added: “Working on a site as historically significant as Canons Ashby is an honour. Our goal here was to ensure that we retained the historic character of these beautiful sash windows whilst also meeting the necessary standards for performance and comfort.”

“When working on a Grade I listed building such as Canons Ashby, there are incredibly strict guidelines in place to ensure the history of the building is respected. The project really showcases our specialist skills and time-honoured techniques, and we’re very proud to be able to contribute to the preservation of the UK’s heritage.”
