The Envelope Collective has arrived!

Lauren Walker discusses the launch of the Envelope Collective, a community for every woman connected to the building envelope sector, at any level, in any role, which she has co-founded.

“The Envelope Collective was born from a simple but important observation made by David Lonergan: our industry has a representation problem. Despite the scale and complexity of the building envelope sector, women remain noticeably underrepresented across many roles, disciplines and decision-making spaces. Too often, they find themselves the only woman in the room, navigating networks and environments that weren’t designed with them in mind.

“Recognising this gap was the starting point but turning it into something meaningful required a team to bring the idea to life. That’s where the five of us came together: to shape David’s initial concept into a community that could make a real difference.

“The Envelope Collective is designed for women working across every part of the building envelope, regardless of seniority, employer or specialism. It’s a space that acknowledges the diversity of the sector and the wide range of experiences within it. A space where everyone is welcome.

“Our purpose reaches beyond gender alone. Each of us has seen how many perspectives in this industry remain unheard or undervalued. The Collective aims to amplify those voices, believing that diversity of thought leads to better outcomes, not just for the people working in the sector, but for everyone who interacts with the built environment.

“The group is shaped around three commitments: building a supportive community; increasing visibility and opportunity for women; and driving cultural change. The goal is to create a professional environment where women feel empowered, energised, and able to thrive without having to dilute themselves or constantly prove their worth.

“To support this mission, we’re launching Envelope Elevenses in January, a relaxed, monthly conversation, where women can connect, share experiences, exchange opportunities and speak openly about the reality of working in the sector. No hierarchy, no pressure, just honest conversation and collective support.

“By turning one person’s observation into a shared initiative, the Envelope Collective represents the start of something bigger: a more inclusive, representative and collaborative future for the building envelope industry. Allies who want to support that change are welcome too, meaningful progress is always a team effort.”
