T Levels can be a way of bridging the skills gap within the glazing sector

T Levels and The Education Landscape

The glazing industry faces mounting pressures – increasing demand for energy efficient installations, retrofit challenges, and a workforce demographic shifting towards retirement. Technical trades like glazing must bridge skills gaps quickly. T Level industry placements, now integral to the UK’s post-16 technical qualifications, offer a compelling solution.

What are T Levels and Industry Placements?

T Levels are two-year, employer designed qualifications equivalent to three A Levels, blending classroom learning (80%) with real world workplace experience (20%) equal to approximately 315 hours or 45 days of a meaningful industry placement.

There is flexibility too – up to 20% of placements can be completed remotely (50% for Digital T Levels), including shared placement options and even funding for SMEs to help cover the essential costs of hosting students (where the provider can offer this).

You can find all T Levels and the different specialisms that may suit your business here.

Why glazing businesses should engage

Hosting a T Level student gives you early insight into emerging talent – young people who are informed, enthusiastic, and ready to contribute to your organisation. This can become a feedback loop into your recruitment and retention strategy. Placements can be structured as blocks, day release, or hybrid, allowing small glazing firms to tailor involvement based on workflow and staff support capacity.

Students bring fresh ideas, especially around digital tools, sustainable materials, or design trends. Many SME’s have gone on to recruit their T Level students into apprenticeships or permanent roles after placement. Hosting a student nurtures line management skills amongst staff, strengthening leadership and team dynamics. Supervisors benefit professionally, even from a small-scale placement with minimal upfront cost.

Engaging in T Level placements demonstrates community investment and enhances local reputation.

Getting Started: Glazing Business Action Plan

  1. Access support by visiting the T Level Employer Support website for guidance on planning, and placement setup on the Government website here. You can also access events and one-to- one support. Do keep an eye on upcoming events here or email employers@strategicdevelopmentnetwork.co.uk to arrange a call with a T Level specialist. All support is free of charge and delivered by the SDN Mesma Group on behalf of the Department for Education.
  2. Prepare for placement – start to explore the placement model that works for you and what you will need to have in place here.
  3. Work with local T Level providers to co-design meaningful projects that benefit your business and align with the T Level curriculum.
  4. During placement, set clear learning goals and monitor progress collaboratively with the provider.
  5. After placement, debrief with providers and consider if the student fits a recruitment need in your business.

By embracing these placements, glazing firms can help shape the next generation’s perceptions of trade careers, develop a bespoke talent pipeline, and reinforce their contribution to technical excellence. In a sector needing skilled professionals, these placements are a tangible investment in your business’s future and the future of glazing.
