Keel’s Joinery lends expertise to local DIYSOS project

Glasgow-based Keel’s Joinery and Construction recently took part in a life-changing episode of BBC’s DIYSOS, lending their time and skills to an emotional house renovation in nearby Newton Mearns.

The project focused on transforming the home of a young girl who uses a wheelchair, following the tragic loss of her mum.

Chris and Jodie Keel, along with an array of other joiners and tradespeople helped renovate the entire downstairs of the house, creating a more accessible and comfortable space for the family.

Keel’s got involved after spotting a call-out on Facebook and quickly stepped forward.

“We were really excited,” said Chris.

“We’ve never done anything like this before, but it felt like the perfect time to give back as it was for such a good cause.”

Many hands make light work

Over the course of the two days that Keel’s were on site, the team got through a huge scope of work, including: help building an extension, creating a new garden room, installing a wet room, plus adding fencing, cladding, and digging in sleepers.

Chris said that due to everyone on site being happy to help out wherever needed, it created a brilliant atmosphere on site.

He said: “It was hands down the best job site I’ve ever worked on. Seeing everyone come together like that was amazing.”

The reveal day on Day Eight was said to be an emotional one.

Jodie said: “There were around 400 people there at the end, and so many were in tears, from the tradespeople to the family. It was incredible seeing the final transformation. It really hit home how important it all was.

“The experience has definitely changed us, and we are now looking at potential future opportunities to help out in the local community.”

She concluded: “It’s so easy to get stuck in your own world. But this reminded me that we’re stronger together. If we all pull in the same direction, there’s no limit to what we can achieve.”

The episode is set to air later this autumn or early next spring. Chris and Jodie would like to give a big shoutout to all the incredible people and suppliers who helped make the project a memorable one.
