BWF’s Helen Hewitt looks at the year ahead

Helen Hewitt, CEO of the British Woodworking Federation (BWF), gives her thoughts on what the sector will look like as we go through 2026, and how the association is on hand to help.

“2026 will see the woodworking and joinery manufacture sector navigate tightening regulation, demand weakness, increasing margin pressures alongside a slowdown in housebuilding and domestic repair, maintenance and improvement (RMI) markets.

“While the Construction Products Association’s State of Trade Autumn Forecast predicts UK construction growth to increase to 2.8%, this headline figure masks the reality many businesses face. But there is sun amongst the clouds – particularly in high-value commercial refurbishment, specialist projects, and niche fit-out projects where there is opportunity for growth.

“BWF research shows that credibility and professionalism are decisive in a cautious market: 39% of homeowners and 40% of housebuilders value membership of a professional body, while 42% of housebuilders prioritise suppliers belonging to a recognised industry scheme.

“Through BWF membership and adherence to a rigorous Code of Conduct, our members demonstrate their professionalism and provide vital reassurance to customers. At the same time, the BWF champions member interests, drives standards and regulation, elevates the sector’s profile, and works with government to secure timber’s long-term role in the built environment.

“A strong example of this is the BWF’s spearheading of the Construction Coalition. By leading the 30-organisation strong Coalition to challenge the Government’s detrimental apprenticeship reforms, we have already secured a pause to the changes to all construction related apprenticeships, including carpentry and joinery, and a seat on the new Skills England Task Force.

“The next 12 months will no doubt hold fresh challenges, but our sector’s resilience, positivity and collaboration will drive opportunities and shape the profession for the next generation.”

UAP says firemongery “should be treated seriously”

Elliott Dawson, National Accounts Manager at UAP, explains why firemongery is more than a finishing touch.
